I’m sitting here next to my four-year-old son. He’s watching a video on his tablet and I’m here listening to Afro beats.  It’s almost 5 pm and the sun is beginning to set. I have my windows open as the sun flickers through and the wind blows gently making my sheer curtains dance around me. There’s hardly anyone on the street.  I’ve been working from home for the past three and a half years and iI have loved every second of it. To actually be productive while working from home was an uphill battle initially, but once I got the hang of it, it has been a breeze.  Anywho, I’m a homebody and an introvert so I’m flourishing and relishing these moments, where I get to spend extra time with my family. Prior to working from home, I was working as an attorney in New York City, working 10-12 hours and even sometimes 14-hour days. So Im extremely grateful that now I don’t have to work those grueling hours, and more importantly I get to work from the comfort of my home. But truth be told, I was not taking that much better care of myself. In the fast-paced world we live in, taking time for self-care often takes a backseat to our busy schedules. However, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for maintaining balance and finding fulfillment in our lives. In this blog post, we explore the importance of self-care and share practical self-care rituals that can help you achieve a more harmonious and fulfilling life.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF CARE
Self-care is more than just pampering yourself occasionally; it’s a holistic approach to maintaining your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Here’s why it’s crucial:
Stress Reduction: Self-care practices can reduce the harmful effects of stress on your body and mind, helping you stay resilient in the face of life’s challenges.
Improved Mental Health: Self-care can boost your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, and enhance your overall mental health.
Enhanced Productivity: Taking time for self-care can actually make you more productive by improving focus and concentration.
Better Relationships: When you care for yourself, you are better equipped to nurture healthy relationships with others.
Increased Resilience: Self-care builds emotional and mental resilience, enabling you to bounce back from setbacks more effectively.
PRACTICAL SELF CARE RITUALS
Now, let’s explore some self-care rituals you can incorporate into your daily, weekly, or monthly routine:
DAILY MINDFULNESS PRACTICE
I start my day with a few minutes of mindfulness meditation to set a positive tone. I also like to journal three things I’m grateful for every morning.
- Throughout the day, take short breaks to practice deep breathing and center yourselfEnsure you get enough sleep each night to recharge your body and mind. I know this is easier said than done. As a mum of three, a wife, a corporate attorney and entrepreneur, sticking to a regular sleep schedule is almost impossible. But I’m trying every day to make sure I have at least six hours of sleep every night.
- Create a calming bedtime routine to signal your body that it’s time to relax. I have an alarm that lets begin the winding down process. I put away all screens, take a warm shower and get ready for bed (provided the kids have bathed and are in bed alread
PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH
3. Regular Exercise:
In theory we all know we need to exercise at least 30 minutes every day, but do we really? Finding time in my busy schedule was hard. I would postpone working out until by the time I realize its time to pick up the kids from school. So I end up doing eveyrthing else but exercising. But your health is you wealth. As we get older we have more responsibilities, and it becomes difficult to exercise regularly…. but our health should be non compromisable. Wat I’ve found to be helpful is creating a routine and sticking to it.Engage in physical activity you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, dancing, jogging, or simply taking a leisurely walk.
- Exercise releases endorphins, which boost your mood.
4. Healthy Eating Habits:
- Nourish your body with balanced, nutritious meals.
- Treat yourself occasionally with your favorite indulgence, guilt-fre

DIGITAL DETOX
- Â
Most of us have become cyber zombies. We are so attached to our phones that we cant lay them down for even ten minutes. This is very harmful to the human body and brain. Lets take time to unplug from screens for a set period everyday . Use this time journal, enjoy nature, play with your family, or read a good book. Reading is one of my favorite things to do and I take time to do it everyday because it brings me joy. Reading is one of those things I do for self care too. There are so many amazing books out there but I’m currently reading a few self help/ transformational books that I’d love to recommend:
TRANSITION YOUR WARDROBE
This is an excellent time to go ahead and do a massive transition of your wardrobe. Go ahead and put away all your fancy colorful summer clothes, its time to pull out the heavy trench coats and jackets.  especially if you live in the Northeast. It’s already pretty cold here in New York. I use this time to curate my capsule winter wardrobe, making sure I have all my essential winter pieces… more about that in my next post, so check it out. You can also take stock of what you haven’t worn these past seasons and start a donate/giveaway/sell pile. One thing I’ve realized is that sometimes decluttering our space, especially our closets, helps to declutter out minds. We have so many items that no longer fit or serve us. Taking time to clear your wardrobe of clothes that no longer fit or serve you at this point in your life is one of my favorite forms of self-care. Sometimes we don’t realize how holding on to certain things affects our mental health negatively. Sometimes its much better to let go of the emotions, the memories, and … the clothes. I have about 3 bags of donations and 1 bag of things I may end up selling. Poshmark and ebay are great place sto sell your gently used clothes and accessories.Â
GET TO KNOW YOURSELF & LOVED ONES BETTER
Dedicate time to connect with friends and family.Nurture meaningful relationships that bring joy and happiness to your life. Put those smartphones and tablets to work! This is probably the best time to FaceTime, group message, Instagram Live, and text message your friends and family, especially those you don’t get to see often. FaceTime is still pretty cool and gives you a way to connect authentically. If you’re worried about how you look then talking on the phone might be a better option. My parents live in Ghana, so we spend time with them through video chats, and its really amazing.
Spa and Self-Care Treatments:
- Treat yourself to a spa day at home with a relaxing bath, facials, or massages whilst listening to your favorite music, you can light scented candles for an extra boost.
- Pamper yourself with your favorite skincare products.
Reflect and Journal:
- Set aside time for self-reflection and journaling. Dont dismiss how you feel at any time. Listen to your body. Explore your thoughts, feelings, and gut. One thing that has really helped me is learning to say No. It can be very difficult to say No and prioritize the things that matter to you, but trust me saying No is very important. We are drawn in so many directions people are asking for varying things at different times, its os east to let go and go with the flow. But that can lead to you always being drained and burned out. Practice setting boundaries and saying no when needed, especially when it doesnt align with your values and goals. Protect your time and energy for what truly matters to you.
